Should you open a card this month? Only if a trip is already on the calendar, housing will run through Bilt, and the 90-day spend window does not collide with the week you fly.

That card, if we apply at all, is Palladium. A welcome bonus is not a reason. A one-day transfer bonus is not a reason. A lounge is not a reason.

## Who this is for

A working family looking at the kitchen calendar and asking the question honestly. Kids in school. Rent, a mortgage, or HOA. One or two trips a year.

## Skip this if

There is no trip in the next 12 months. Housing will not run through Bilt. The $4,000 in 90 days hits the travel month and you need that cash the week you fly. You want statement-credit cash back. You cannot use a $495 fee. The kids still need passports for an international itinerary. Answer no to any of those and do not apply.

## How it works

Five questions. A no on any of them is a skip.

**1\. Is there a trip in the next 12 months?** If you cannot name the month you leave, you do not apply. “We should travel more” is not a trip. Spring break with school dates is. A weekend with a Friday written down is, and that weekend is not a reason to apply either. Book it with cash or with points already in the airline.

**2\. Will rent, mortgage, and HOA actually run through Bilt?** If no, the housing story is not for you. Commercial mortgages are not eligible. Pay housing in the app, not by typing the card number into a portal that charges a fee.

**3\. Can Palladium be the daily driver for 90 days?** The current welcome offer, confirm on the live apply page, is 50,000 points plus Gold after $4,000 of everyday (non-housing) spend in 90 days, and $300 Bilt Cash on open with no spend. If the fly week sits inside that window and you need those dollars to travel, wait. Do not invent purchases. Do not carry a balance.

Gold, if you hit the 90-day: the rest of the year you earned it, the next full year, and through January 15 of the year after. Confirm on the live terms. Welcome points and Gold can take 6–8 weeks to post. It is still not why you apply.

**4\. Will you concentrate spend?** Housing-only 1.25x wants everyday spend at or above that month’s housing. Flexible Bilt Cash is a choice you make on purpose. If you will not concentrate and you do not want Bilt Cash, skip the card. Authorized users are $95\. Confirm live.

**5\. Can you use the $495 fee?** The hotel credit is $200 January–June and $200 July–December, two-night minimum, Bilt Travel, no rollover. The second-half 2026 window is live through December 31\. $200 Bilt Cash lands each January 1\. Only $100 of Cash rolls year to year. Those credits count only on travel you already wanted. If you only want bank cash back, skip.

Transfers are 1:1 and irreversible. Allow 48 hours, 72 for Southwest. Search, then transfer. That is a different post.

## What to do this month

If every answer is yes, apply for Palladium only. Confirm the live offer. Default housing toggle is Housing-only. You get seven days after open to change it, then it waits for the next billing cycle. Put everyday spend on the card. Run housing through the app. Do not transfer points until a seat or stay is on the screen. If you use the hotel credit, opt in at checkout, two nights, Bilt Travel. Do not close the account within 90 days of a credit. Clawback language is in the current terms.

If any answer is no, wait. Passports first if that is the bottleneck. Dates first. Then come back.

## What not to do

Do not apply for a weekend hop in the next 30 days. Cash, or points already in Southwest. Bilt to Rapid Rewards needs 72 hours. Do not apply to catch a one-day Virgin transfer bonus. Welcome status is Gold, and a bonus is not a reason to open. Do not apply for someone else’s lounge. Palladium’s Priority Pass is what it is; a second premium annual fee is a second card, and we are not opening a second card. Do not apply because a phone plan saved you money. Do not open CSR, CSP, Southwest, or an AA Executive. One card. Palladium. Or none.
